"Art has to come from somewhere. I grew up in the Garlic Flats where I first developed a sense of Place. What I remember vividly are the gardens we planted. I learned early how to tend plants, how to harvest and eat the plants we grew. The relationship between people and the edible garden impressed itself on my young imagination. My work is about the backyard garden. It’s about what I have seen, what I have remembered, what I have dreamt about and experienced as a gardener. Once I got involved in art making, I discovered that making art is like tending a garden. If you want your garden to grow you have to cultivate it, nurture it, shape it and tend it." – Victor Cicansky, 2008
